8,040 Euro for one year

Before you get the permission to study in Germany, you have to proof that you can finance it properly. There are different options for that. We give you an overview of the most popular ones.

You need it, to pay your rent, to go shopping and to party: money. Before you begin your studies, you will have to show how you intend to finance your stay. You must provide what is called a “Finanzierungsnachweis” or “proof of financial resources”. In most cases, you are required to include this document with your visa application. At the latest, you will need it when you apply for a residence permit.

At present, foreign students must prove they have at least 8,040 euro per year at their disposal (about 670 euro per month). Proof of financial resources can be provided in various ways. The following forms are generally accepted:

1. Your parents submit documents certifying their income and financial assets.
2. A resident in Germany provides the Aliens’ Registration Office a guarantee to cover your expenses.
3. You submit a bank guarantee.
4. You receive a scholarship from a recognised scholarship provider.
5. A security payment is deposited into a blocked account.

Be sure to enquire at the German embassy in your country as to which form of financial proof is required.

Please note: International students are only allowed to work in Germany under certain conditions. A part-time job may supplement your budget, but it almost certainly won’t be able to cover all your living expenses.

Tips for a blocked account

Many international students from Non-EU countries prefer to open a blocked account as proof of their financial resources. It's called blocked account because the money you transfer to it, is blocked till the day you've arrived in Germany.

Opening your own blocked account isn't that difficult. There are only a few things you should keep in mind in order to make it work:

1. File for it early enough

For example the Deutsche Bank needs about a week to set up your blocked account. At the beginning of a semester it might take even longer. Therefore please request the application forms in time and send an email to db.student@db.com asking for these documents.

2. Get your documents certified

Fill out the forms completely, copy your passport and get them certified by the general consulate or German Embassy in your country. Now you can send them to the Deutsche Bank. Please note: Don't email or fax them because the bank accepts the originals only.

3. Open an account

After the bank has received your complete documents, it will set up your blocked account. That costs you 50 euro once but same time safes you precious time.

4. Getting money

Once you've arrived in Germany you should make an appointment with the bank's branch office in your city. There you'll get your EC-card, which allows you to withdraw money and also your login data for online banking.
